I created this blog almost exactly three months ago, mere days before the anime summer season began, as it turned out, and so my development as an anime blogger took place in parallel with the shows that debuted at that time and have since ended.

So what lessons have I learned in this short timespan of chronicling the animated goodies bestowed upon us from the Far East?

  1. Balancing post quantity and post quality is a tightrope act. I could spew a daily dose of meaningless drivel. Or I could take three weeks to craft a witty, insightful gem of a post that analyzes a show so deeply Freud and Jung would hold each other weeping. Yet, in either case, I’d be doing both myself and the reader a disservice: the reader would be buried under an avalanche of blandness or left starving for more while I, the author, would suffer under my own moral imperative to birth a new post every goddamn day or become so obsessed with writing a marvel of a post that I’d never work up the courage to hit the “Publish” button.
  2. Blogging trainwrecks can be fun! Re: Koihime Musou and Sekirei, for example. Blogging nothing but trainwrecks might get old quickly however. Fortunately, fall season is thus far beating summer season and making itself a necklace with summer season’s broken teeth, so I’m not too worried at the moment about this particular issue rearing its head. To file under this header: Rosario To Vampire CAPU2.
  3. I should leave some for the rest of the anime blogosphere. There’s no need for me to work myself to death watching and writing about every goddamn piece of anime crap that sees the light of day. I reckon the world will not explode if I pass on Sky Galaxy Magical Schoolgirl X38 . And my blood pressure might even improve! But the start of an anime season being what it is, I can hardly pass up the chance to sample the surge of fresh shows, all eager to impress me.

But my most cherished lesson is that this is not a job. I have a tiiiiiiiny perfectionist streak and I spent way too many hours obsessing over whether I was writing decent posts or not. Or whether I was writing regularly enough. Or whether my prose was at anywhere near the level of the other 12,067,438 other anime bloggers’s.

Just like fall… this season, I’m gonna chill. And I hope we’ll hang out together, dear reader.

Introducing… just a blogroll.

To quote Bug-Eyed Earl, no man is an island, but if you duct-tape a bunch of dead guys together they make a decent raft. And so it is with bloggers!

How to get on the blog roll:

  1. I’m not a blog hunter scouring the vast expanses of the open Internet looking for acquaintances; I’m mostly content to sit here in my tiny corner of cyberspace and push out posts and reviews on my own like a dedicated worker ant. So please, leave a comment if you read and have a blog of your own, else there’s no way I’ll ever find out about it!
  2. Related to the above, RSS feed is an absolute necessity, otherwise I’ll totally forget about you and your site and hence it won’t ever make it to the Blogroll widget.
  3. Try to write some half-decent posts. (Do as I say, not as I do…)
  4. Hating Suzaku is a sure-fire way to be added nigh-instantaneously, though not a prerequisite.
  5. Although I’ve been known to review hentai games for a prominent Internet humor website, I try not to dabble into the ecchi material, even if I sometimes download a show simply because of its completely arresting title. (“Milk Junkies Sisters”. Hentai or thinly-veiled propaganda from Japan’s Dairy Foods Association? Had to find out. Answer: giant boobs galore.)

Forgiveness please.

For me, setting up a new computer is a happier occasion than Christmas and my birthday rolled together in one, simply because of the potential I can smell in the air, crackling lightning that delights me as I plug in the parts and reinstall all the programs to bring this new beast up to speed.

And a beast ’tis. With 2 terabytes of storage and a 24″ screen, it screams “anime watching station” at me… but it also means I wasted my planned day of writing on Koihime Musou and the rest of the week’s shows. Ah well. I will be back tomorrow, promise.

For the moment, I’m off to fiddle some more with this baby’s guts! Metaphorically speaking, of course. My Saturday nights aren’t that satanic.

Wait, the anime industry’s broken?

Over at Shameful Otaku Secret, the venerable Otou-san has been discussing the woes of the anime industry of the past few days, first defining the problem and putting forth some ideas, then asking famous bloggers for their take on the issue. (As I write this last bit he’s putting the final post or two… Do go read, they’re all interesting, well-thought out reads.)

Of course I ain’t one of those featured bloggers; perhaps this has to do with me not even knowing that the anime industry was in dire straits in the first place, although I did hear that Japan’s economy had taken a bearish downturn in the last years. Or perhaps because I made the leap to “anime blogger” a whole month ago, so I’m not exactly world-famous… yet.

But there’s no law that says I can’t jump in, no? So here we go! In the blue corner: the poor beleaguered behemoth studios and licensing companies. In the red corner: evil fansubbers who eat babies for breakfast!

How anime companies would like to deal with fansubbers. (Artist rendition).

(Foreword: This is what, my third Code Geass rant in as many weeks? Forgive my indulgence, dear reader, but Code Geass is so interesting I’m afraid to pass up any opportunity to dissect the beast while it still breathes. Plus everyone’s watching it so I’m not spoiling anyone’s fun – at least I hope so. Read on!)

Guess what I found out today?

This blog is ranked #1 on Google for the keywords “karen bondage code geass“. Go ahead, try it; you’ll just end up back here.

Part of me is sad beyond words at this turn of events, but then again, another chuckling part is tickled pink that my favoritest anime character has become so popular, and in some twisted perverted way, I am at the forefront of her popularity. Even if it involves handcuffs!

But since we’ve broached the Karen topic, why not ride it for a while and expound on why I like her so much? Aye. Full speed ahead it is, then.

I hope you won’t mind if I use this blog to share some romantic problems with you, dear readers.

You see… Well, it’s a bit embarrassing. There’s this girl with whom I’ve been spending a lot of time. I’ve haven’t known her for long, but already I find myself liking her. A lot. Her name’s Code Geass, and she’s quite the looker – but that’s not my problem, obviously. Who would mind going out with such a good-looking, popular girl?
